Rice

Rice is the staple food for over half the world's population (~530 MMT milled, $300B+ farm gate). India + China + Indonesia + Bangladesh produce ~65% of global output but most consumption is domestic. Global trade is only ~55-60 MMT/yr - thin relative to production - which makes any policy shock from major exporters market-defining. India = ~40% of global trade; its 2023/24 export ban moved global prices 30%+. Sharp segmentation: commodity long-grain (non-basmati, IRRI), premium aromatic (Basmati, Jasmine, ST25), and Japonica (Japan/California/EU). Sub-Saharan Africa urbanization is the structural demand driver; parboiled long-grain dominant format. Key risks: India policy, monsoon variability, China demand swings.
