Bangladesh market dynamics

Fragmented smallholder supply and weak standardization. Production is highly dispersed among smallholders with limited orchard management, leading to inconsistent quality, variable maturity and high post-harvest losses.[1][2][9] The lack of universally applied grading and packing standards constrains the development of uniform export grades and depresses farmer prices, though it also offers margin to organized aggregators.[9]

Moderate global growth with policy-driven demand pockets. From 2007 to 2018, global jute and jute-like fibre output grew around 1.8% per year, with market revenue reaching about USD 2.7 billion in 2018.[3] Growth is uneven; traditional bag and sacking demand is flat to modest, while policy-driven substitution away from plastics is creating pockets of strong demand for jute bags, sacks and eco-friendly products in India, Europe and selected markets.[3][4]

Industry restructuring in traditional jute mills. Legacy jute mills in India and Bangladesh face challenges from rising labour costs, outdated machinery and competition from diversified, more efficient producers.[2][3] This is driving consolidation, closures and a gradual shift toward higher-value diversified jute products, changing the structure of demand for raw fibre qualities and grades.

Shifting demand from South Asia and North Africa. Income growth, population increases, and dietary patterns in South Asia and North Africa continue to underpin structural demand for chickpeas, particularly Desi types in India and Pakistan and Kabuli types around the Mediterranean. Import demand is sensitive to local harvest outcomes and policy actions, which can cause sharp swings in buying volumes year to year.
